Resolved Question: Does searching for a phrase increase web traffic (Search Engine Optimization)?

I like an independent computer game a friend of mine makes. I would like to help him gain more web recognition, because he operates on donations from those who play his game (free of charge). Does searching for a specific phrase in a search engine like Google increase its rankings in a search? For example, if "[game name]" was searched 10000 times, would that increase the chance that "[game name]" would show up in a websearch? If so, can the same principal be applied to other related phrases like "[game name] free computer game" or "[game name] fun computer game?" I think I could get 100 of his players, to search a phrase with his game name in it 1000 times by copying and pasting it into a Google search bar thus generating 100,000 searches for his game. Would this have any effect on getting his game noticed? Failing that, or in addition to it, how does search engine optimization work? It can't just be off keyphrases for crawlers to work, because you'd think they'd want the most searched for sites at the top of the list.
